Welche Rolle spielt dabei Wohneigentum?

Was empfehlen Sie dort?

Published as a Brandreport in the «Future of Finance» publication by Smart Media. A conversation about common misconceptions and the switches you have to set early.

Retirement is one of the biggest turning points in life. Anyone who plans too late loses room to manoeuvre and risks poor decisions. That makes structured preparation all the more important — preparation that makes the connections visible and assesses the options clearly.

Many people put off the subject of retirement for a long time. Why is that a mistake?

Because for many people retirement is one of the biggest financial changes in life. Yet it is often only addressed concretely shortly before stopping work. By then the room to manoeuvre is usually much smaller. Anyone who plans early can optimise taxes, spot income gaps, deploy pension assets deliberately, prepare mortgage structures and also start this new phase of life in better emotional shape. My experience from almost twenty years of advising shows: those who know what is coming face retirement more calmly and with more confidence.

What in your view is the biggest misconception about retirement planning?

Many believe it is simply a matter of knowing how high the AHV and pension-fund pensions will be, or whether it is better to take a pension or capital. That falls short. Good financial planning answers far more questions: will my assets last? When do I need liquidity? What happens if I withdraw early from working life? Are AHV contributions owed as a non-employed person? How do taxes, income and assets develop? When is the right moment to hand over a property or one's own company?

Good planning does not begin only with figures, but with the question of how someone wants to live. Financial planning is an analysis from several perspectives. It touches security, freedom, family, health, housing, quality of life and the appropriate investment strategy. Nor is it a snapshot: it connects income, assets, pensions, taxes, standard of living, family situation and personal goals into a robust overall picture.

What role does home ownership play?

A very large one. The family home is emotionally important, but financially often a significant risk factor too. Many underestimate that affordability changes in retirement. The salary falls away and is replaced by pension income or asset drawdown. The bank recalculates. At the same time maintenance, renovations or energy refurbishment may be due.

It should therefore be clarified early whether the mortgage remains affordable long term, whether amortisation is sensible and possible, how much liquidity has to be reserved, and whether the home still suits the situation at an older age. Sometimes staying in the home is the right solution. In other cases downsizing, a transfer to the next generation, a right of residence or usufruct may make more sense.

When at the latest should serious planning begin?

Ideally ten to twenty years before retirement. From 55 at the latest, the subject should be tackled systematically and in depth. Important switches can still be set then: pension-fund buy-ins, staggering of pension withdrawals, amortisation, or a gradual transition into retirement. If someone knows that another CHF 50,000 should be saved before retirement, that is more realistic over ten years than over two. That said, I resist rigid age limits. Pension planning may already concern young adults — there is almost always something to optimise.

Which points are particularly often underestimated?

Above all the tax consequences, the change in income after working life, and the long-term affordability of the accustomed standard of living. With retirement, regular salary income disappears. Pensions, capital withdrawals, investment returns and drawdowns suddenly have to be coordinated so that taxes, living costs, planned investments and unexpected expenses remain affordable.

Good financial planning shows not only whether retirement is affordable. It also shows which decisions have to be taken when, and which measures take priority. Uncertainty thereby becomes a concrete roadmap. The long-term effects of part-time workloads are also often underestimated. Especially for married couples or partnerships, new possibilities can arise from this, for example with pension-fund buy-ins or in coordinating pensions, capital withdrawals and taxes.

It is equally important that certain wrong decisions can hardly be corrected afterwards. Anyone who opts for a capital withdrawal makes a definitive decision. Different scenarios should therefore be calculated properly and compared with one another. In the end it is not only the mathematics that decides, but also the personal sense of security. In my view that is legitimate: not everyone feels comfortable managing a larger sum of capital on their own responsibility in retirement.

Why is planning more demanding for couples and families than for single people?

Because it is not only about individuals. Married couples, registered partnerships, cohabiting couples and patchwork families have different legal, financial and emotional starting points. Protection, succession, home ownership and responsibility towards close relatives therefore have to be clarified carefully.

Among cohabiting couples there is often the misconception that a long-standing partnership automatically leads to rights similar to marriage. That is not the case. Without clear arrangements, the surviving partner may be inadequately protected under inheritance law. At the same time, uncoordinated asset transfers can disadvantage other people, for example children from an earlier relationship. With patchwork families, coordination is particularly important. Close cooperation between the client, the financial planner and the notary helps to align pensions, inheritance law and finances sensibly.

Many treat the pension certificate as their central point of reference. Why is it not enough on its own?

Because the pension certificate shows only part of the picture. The real challenge lies in the interplay of AHV, pension fund, pillar 3a, assets, taxes, property, mortgages, living costs and planned expenditure. The art is to develop from these elements a robust strategy that matches the client's expectations and goals.

Many people face questions here that are hard to assess fully without professional guidance. Laws, structuring options and long-term interactions are complex and change frequently. Common mistakes arise precisely there: people take irreversible decisions, such as capital withdrawals or early retirement, on the basis of assumptions or recommendations from their circle, without having analysed and calculated the consequences properly. Every situation is different and has to be considered on its own terms. Bar-stool recommendations are rarely helpful here.

What matters with early or partial retirement?

Early retirement can be possible and sensible, but it comes at a cost. Leaving earlier means lower pension-fund benefits, longer drawdowns from assets, possible AHV contributions as a non-employed person, and tax effects too. Different scenarios should therefore be calculated. Options such as continued insurance in the pension fund or a step-by-step withdrawal from working life should also be examined.

Partial retirement can be an elegant way of getting used to the new phase of life in stages. But it has financial consequences that you should know about.

You also advise entrepreneurs. What do you recommend there?

For entrepreneurs, retirement planning is often more complex. Assets are partly tied up in the business and partly private. A good balance between salary, dividend, pension-fund solution, liquidity and tax burden is central. It is precisely in occupational pensions that there are interesting structuring options for entrepreneurs and for their staff. These include executive pension solutions or, where the conditions are met, so-called 1e plans.

It has to be examined whether salary structure, risk capacity, tax planning and long-term strategy fit together. A well-coordinated pension solution can also be an instrument for retaining executives and key employees. It can likewise help to prepare succession planning early and in a tax-efficient way.

What characterises your advice and what goal do you pursue with your clients?

I attach great importance to an independent, honest and comprehensible overall analysis. It is not about selling a solution quickly, but about creating transparency. My clients should understand where they stand, what options they have and what consequences individual decisions trigger.

Just before retirement, what is needed is not sales rhetoric or a product list, but clarity, experience and careful planning. It is not only about figures. It is about bringing figures into line with the client's wishes, life goals and need for security. Above all that requires one thing: listening well. My goal is that people can face their retirement with more calm and security. Those who know their figures and have a clear plan make better decisions. Retirement then becomes not a source of uncertainty, but a consciously shaped new phase of life.
