4. Was eine Frühpensionierung wirklich kostet

Retirement

Capital or pension — and what the AHV has to do with it

How to set the three big switches of retirement: the form of withdrawal, the AHV timing and the real cost of retiring early.

Blog · Retirement · 02.07.2026

How to set the three big switches of retirement: the form of withdrawal, the AHV timing and the real cost of retiring early.

Few financial decisions have effects as long-lasting as those around retirement. Once you take your pension-fund assets as capital, you cannot turn them back into a pension. Once you draw the AHV early, you live with the reduction for life. Conversely, careful planning over the years can avoid a five- or six-figure amount in taxes and forgone benefits. This article sorts out the three central switches and shows why the order matters.

1. Capital or pension: the fundamental question of the second pillar

Three routes are open when drawing pension-fund assets: the lifelong pension, the one-off capital withdrawal, or a mixture. The pension is calculated using the conversion rate. For the mandatory portion the statutory minimum conversion rate is 6.8 per cent; on extra-mandatory assets many funds apply lower rates, so the effective blended rate is often below that. A look at your pension regulations is therefore the first step.

The pension offers security and longevity protection: it is paid for life, regardless of markets and age, and is taxed fully as income. The capital withdrawal brings flexibility, inheritability and — thanks to a one-off tax, separate from other income and at a reduced rate — often a lower tax burden, but it shifts investment and longevity risk onto you.

The pension is guaranteed, lifelong and predictable, and carries no investment risk. In return it is fully taxed as income, and on death residual capital partly lapses depending on the regulations. Capital is flexible, inheritable and taxed once at a reduced rate. In return, investment and longevity risk rest with you, and drawing it down requires discipline.

A fictitious example: a married couple, both 64, has pension-fund assets of around CHF 600,000. Taking it all as a pension would yield — depending on the effective conversion rate — a lifelong pension in the order of CHF 35,000 to 40,000 a year, fully taxable. Taking it all as capital would trigger a one-off separate capital-withdrawal tax whose amount depends heavily on the canton of residence. A split, for instance a pension for basic costs and capital for reserves, combines both logics. The actual figures vary considerably from case to case and must be calculated for your canton.

2. The tax lever: stagger rather than take everything at once

In most cantons, capital payments from pension schemes are taxed progressively: the higher the sum in one tax year, the higher the rate. Drawing pension-fund capital and the balances of several pillar 3a accounts in the same year therefore risks an unnecessarily steep progression. Contrary to common belief, Switzerland sets no statutory limit on the number of 3a accounts. That is precisely what creates room to manoeuvre: several accounts can be drawn in stages across different tax years, breaking the progression.

Important: depending on the canton, spouses' withdrawals are added together, and many cantons have rules that aggregate withdrawals made within a few years. Staggering therefore needs to be planned early, ideally five to ten years before retirement. As a guide: the maximum pillar 3a contribution with a pension fund is CHF 7,258 per year.

3. Getting the AHV timing right

The reference age is 65 for women and men; for women it is being raised gradually through the transitional cohorts. The AHV pension can be drawn early or deferred flexibly. Drawing early leads to a lifelong reduction, deferral up to age 70 to a lifelong supplement.

The maximum individual AHV pension is CHF 2,520 per month, the minimum pension with a full contribution period CHF 1,260. For a married couple the cap of 150 per cent applies, that is CHF 3,780 per month. The maximum pension requires 44 uninterrupted contribution years and a revalued average income of around CHF 90,720. Since 2026 the old-age pension is also paid thirteen times a year.

For women of the transitional generation, cohorts 1961 to 1969, reduced reduction rates apply when drawing early, as well as a lifelong pension supplement provided the pension is not drawn early. That fundamentally changes the early-drawing question for these cohorts: drawing early is not «free money sooner», but a trade-off that has to be calculated.

4. What early retirement really costs

Leaving earlier is attractive, but expensive — and on three fronts at once. First, contribution years and retirement capital are missing in the pension fund, which lowers the later pension twice over. Second, drawing the AHV early reduces the pension for life. Third, and often overlooked, the obligation to pay AHV contributions remains: anyone who stops working before the reference age counts as not gainfully employed and must continue paying AHV contributions. Otherwise contribution gaps arise that reduce the later pension further still.

On top of that comes the bridge: the period until the first AHV pension has to be financed from your own assets. This gap is regularly underestimated. Anyone stopping at 62 instead of 65 finances around three years of living costs entirely themselves, continues paying AHV contributions as a non-employed person, and accepts permanently lower pension-fund and AHV benefits.

5. The order decides

The three switches are connected and should not be set in isolation. Anyone who first budgets realistically for their spending in retirement knows how much guaranteed income from pension and AHV they need, and how much capital they can keep free for flexibility and inheritance. Only then can the form of withdrawal, the staggering of 3a accounts and the AHV timing be aligned with one another. An early pension-fund buy-in in the years before retirement can improve this structure further; blocking periods for the subsequent capital withdrawal must however be observed.

Capital or pension, the AHV timing and the question of early retirement are not separate decisions but parts of the same plan. The current figures set the frame; the actual optimisation arises from the interplay with your canton of residence, your family situation and your time horizon. Anyone who starts planning five to ten years before retirement has the greatest leverage — above all in staggering withdrawals and closing contribution gaps.
