Insurance

Compulsory insurance in Switzerland

Health insurance, accident, AVS, pension fund above a certain salary, motor liability: which insurances are compulsory, which the employer carries and which you must take out yourself.

Not every insurance is a matter of taste. Some are required by law, some are covered by the employer, and the rest is your decision.

Definition

Compulsory for everyone resident in Switzerland are basic health insurance, AVS/IV/APG and, depending on the situation, occupational pension and accident insurance. Anyone who keeps a motor vehicle needs liability insurance. In some cantons building insurance is also compulsory.

The essentials explained

Employees are insured against occupational accidents through the employer, and above a minimum weekly working time also against non-occupational accidents. Those who do not work or work little must include accident cover in their health insurance. The self-employed carry most insurances themselves and are often under-insured for accident and disability. Voluntary but important in practice: private liability, household contents and, depending on life situation, disability or death cover.
