BVG-Mindestzinssatz

BVG minimum interest rate

Each year the Federal Council sets the rate at which mandatory retirement savings must at least be credited. What the rate means, what it does not mean and why your fund may credit differently.

The minimum rate is a floor, not a promise: it applies to the mandatory part, and many funds pay more or, in the extra-mandatory part, less.

Definition

The BVG minimum interest rate is the rate at which retirement savings in the mandatory part of occupational pensions must at least be credited. The Federal Council sets it annually, based on the development of returns on federal bonds, equities and real estate and on the recommendation of the BVG commission.

The essentials explained

For the extra-mandatory part the fund’s board decides freely. Comprehensive funds often credit the whole balance at their own rate, which can be above or below the minimum. The rate works over decades: a difference of one percentage point changes the retirement capital noticeably. So a look at the annual report pays off: funding ratio, interest credited in recent years and technical interest rate say more about your fund than the statutory minimum.
