AVS (state pension)

AVS contributions for the self-employed

The self-employed pay their AVS contributions themselves, on net profit and on a sliding scale. How contributions are set and which traps exist.

Without an employer nobody pays half. The self-employed carry the full contribution, but a lower rate applies to low incomes.

Definition

Self-employed persons work on their own account and at their own risk. Their AVS/IV/APG contributions are levied by the compensation office on net profit, first provisionally based on an estimate, later definitively based on the tax assessment.

The essentials explained

The rate is graduated: low incomes pay less, from a certain level the full rate applies. Because the final settlement comes only with the tax assessment, back payments loom if income has risen. Below the minimum contribution, gaps arise. Recognition as self-employed is not a formality: someone working for only one client may count as employed.
